The Rule Of 5: Five Things To Do In Memphis
Are you thinking about a getaway or spring break to Memphis, Tennessee?
With so many things to do and and places to see in this beautiful city, you might become a little overwhelmed as you plan your excursion, especially for short trips. However, by following the advice of Nneka M. Okona’s insightful article, “Rule of 5” in American Way Magazine, you can ensure that you’ll have a pleasant and memorable trip, simply by narrowing your destinations down to the five places that you would most like to experience.
Jane, Sara and Nancy decided to follow Okono’s suggestion for their girls’ getaway to Memphis and came up with a “Rule of 5” gameplan. Their accommodation of choice for the trip was The Guest House of Graceland. A girl needs to be spoiled after all, and, with The Guest House at Graceland’s perfect blend of southern hospitality and elegant style, they could count on being pampered! Although they could have spent the whole trip just enjoying the lavish amenities of the hotel, like the expansive pool, 464-seat theatre, gorgeously decorated suites and fabulous choice of restaurants, Memphis was waiting, and they had things to do and places to go.
Destination #1 – Broad Avenue
What better way to start the day off than with a java boost at City and State, the self-proclaimed curator of awesome coffee! After their caffeine boost, the festivities began with a day out on the town atBroad Avenue Arts District. Home to over 70 antique galleries, boutique shops and restaurants, there’s no shortage of unique entertainment there! From The Cove, a nautical dive bar with a pirate-ship-inspired interior, to Falling into Place, a boutique of handmade accessories like ceramics, local art, and jewelry, there’s sure to be something for every taste and style. With the many, diverse Broad Avenue restaurants to choose from, it’s difficult to decide which one to choose, whether you’re looking for lunch on the run or a relaxing, sit-down dinner. Jane, Sara, and Nancy decided on Bounty on Broad, a fabulous farm-to-table restaurant.Bounty on Broad supports local sources, serving scrumptious American-style plates and also delicious handcrafted cocktails.
Destination #2 – Graceland
With energy to spare after their lovely meal, the ladies were ready to explore Graceland. If you’ve never experienced the Graceland mansion, this is a destination you definitely should add to your bucket list. An unforgettable tour through Elvis Presley’s home and the exhibition across the street will leave you in awe of the artistry, style and history of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. You can plan to take a break for a treat between tours at one of the nearby ice cream shops or restaurants.
Destination #3 – Sun Studio
The girls kept the King’s vibes going by visiting Sun Studio, originally called Memphis Recording Service, the birthplace of Rock and Roll and the home of the “Million Dollar Quartet” – Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. Plan to spend about two hours there, to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the tour and the cafe. For the convenience of guests, there’s a free shuttle to and from Graceland.
Destination #4 – Beale St
Named “America’s Most Iconic Street,” “Tennessee’s Top Tourism Attraction” and “The Official Home of the Blues,” Beale Street was the next must-see spot on their list. Stop in one of the many charismatic bars on this street, and you’ll be tapping your toes, as you listen to the bands crooning the blues while enjoying a beer. Jane, Sara and Nancy found some great restaurants and incredible music during their visit to Beale Street, as well as friendly police officers. (They were just saying hello… No arrests were made during this girls’ getaway!)
Destination #5 – The Beauty Shop
Last, but certainly not least, the group wrapped things up with brunch at The Beauty Shop. Do you remember Priscilla Presley and her famous beehive style? The Beauty Shop was her go-to for a cut and curl! Today, you can enjoying being pampered while you enjoy a scrumptious southern breakfast with a mimosa or bloody mary.
